Green Spark’s video producer, Jim, explains how you can avoid saying Um and Er when speaking on video.

Do you worry that you’re saying Um or Er too much when you’re on video or speaking in public? Well, the solution might be easier than you think.
Hi there, I’m Jim from Green Spark. If you talk on camera, or if you do public speaking, you might worry that you say Um or Er a bit too much. And if you do, your audience might get a bit distracted and lose the message that you’re actually trying to get across.
So, there is an easy way to sort this out. And the main thing that you need to do is just remember that Um, Er, Like, You know, these are all ‘filler words’ that we use when we’re worried that the space in between our thoughts, the silence that happens, is going on for a bit too long and our audience will get distracted or bored. And so we fill it up with meaningless noises.
You don’t need to do that. The silence isn’t really that much of a problem. It’s probably not going on for as long as you feel like it is when you’re the one doing the talking. And, at least in terms of video, it’ll make your video editor your best friend, because that silence between thoughts is the best place to do an edit.
So thanks very much for watching, and I’ll see you next time.
